Collection: Nick Levy's Collection

23rd Avenue sat down with Nick to discuss where he gets his inspiration from.

"I am from Kamilaroi/Ngurubul tribe and I get my inspiration from our peoples stories from the dreaming which have been passed on and practices for over 60,000 years. I also take a lot of inspiration from modern contemporary aboriginal art, traditional aboriginal art styles, still life images and I fuse these styles to create my own unique contemporary modern indigenous art. I draw inspiration from people, places, nature especially, sometimes even just a colour.

Before I do a painting I need to connect with the story, immerse myself in what I am painting to try and understand and see where I can best represent the meaning or story and project that through the finished product. It’s always my goal when I start a painting.

One of my favourite paintings is called “The Starry Night” by Vincent Van Gogh, I love how he painted and seen the world and was able to apply it to a canvas. He also had a unique style of painting which anyone today can look at and know who painted it. This is something I inspire to do with my paintings and creations."
